Bored, seeking iTunes suggestions

I'll catch up on Lost sometime when the weather crew isn't taking up a majority of the time slot. Probably not tomorrow, though. I wonder when the version with commentary becomes available...that would be a nice compromise.

I bought the Bottomless Pit album today via iTunes. If I had a turntable, I'd want the 2x12"+CD package. I also bought Swervedriver's Mezcal Head, part of Miles Smiles (since my CD is apparently lost forever), and a few Hurl songs. I still have some credit left from the iTunes gift card, too, so it's been a great value gift.

I found some old compilation discs I'd made and received 6-8 years ago. iTunes doesn't recognize individual songs, so they're fairly useless now that I don't have the old e-mails or whatever had the track listings. I was able to label most of the 90 Day Men songs I found, though. When I saw them live, I thought that was one of the greatest shows I've seen. Maybe I was manic then. Every song requires a major indie listening filter (you know, the filter that removes all judgments on the vocals, and/or changes all thoughts of "bad" or "pretentious" into "authentic" and "artsy" and "so original", and/or the fact that everything sounds like it's being played in a garage, and so on), and most of them require a lot of patience to get through the first verse. Most of those songs from that album are still interesting, though. I suppose I could have sifted through them and found Hurl's "Bred in Kentucky" and a few Chavez tunes (which I have not purchased yet), but it feels good to buy those sorts of songs anyway.

Speaking of iTunes, I could use your help. What are the top 10 songs and/or top 3 albums I should buy next, in your opinion? (I generally like alternative*, rock, and jazz. I'll check out something considered metal or country, but I hope those will be great examples and/or exception to the rule of the genre.) I promise I'll listen to your suggestions.

This was another day I could have gone for a walk, but the weather forecast and sky suggested it was best to stay inside. So I did. And I got a fair amount of coursework done (my goal for the week has almost been met with two working days left), but I also got a bad case of cabin fever somehow (the weather didn't help). It's a good thing I'm getting out of the house the next two days.

* I've always thought that was the dumbest name for a genre ever. Everything is an alternative to everything else. Now I have to scroll through my entire iTunes library twice to see how the band/artist chose to be classified.

Ok here is a short list...you may HATE these. These are just some songs I really like. Just some suggestions. You may have some of them or they may not be up your alley. Just tossing them out there. I listed the band first...

1. Spoon - The Underdog
2. Interpol - Narc and Evil
3. Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister and No One Knows
4. Snow Patrol - Chocolate
5. Ok Go! - A million Ways to be Cruel
6. Foo Fighters - The Pretender and All My Life
7. The Flaming Lips - Do you Realize?
8. Kasabian - Club Foot
9. Dashboard - Modest Mouse
10.Eric B And Rakim - Don't Sweat the Technique (it breaks the rules...it isn't rock/alternative/pop/...it's like hip hop with jazz)

Interpol - Antics (album) (their sound is very dark. I love them but I can see how some people wouldn't dig them)

Did you think I was going to tell you to go buy a Kenny Chesney album? :-P

And duh I will be happy to send you any of these or make a mix or something. :-)

ooh...I love Interpol. Kasabian's Club Foot is good exercise music, too. Do you like Goldfrapp? I always feel ashamed to admit I like Goldfrapp.

And...now it's in my head. Awesome.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I love Goldfrapp! Love Strict Machine! I didn't put it on the list as I was not sure if Mark would like it. I had to feel out his tastes.

I have a major hard on for Interpol. Well I mean I would if I had a penis.

I'll let you know if I find anything I like THAT much. :)

Interpol reminds me of Midnight Oil (with better vocals) so far.

Oh yes...please report any extreme reactions! The lead singer's voice is compared to the guy from Morphine a lot.

I only have "All My Life", so I'll check out the rest.

I don't know who Kenny Chesney is. (Is that country?)

Yes :-)

I ended up buying "Club Foot". I have "All My Life" and "No One Knows" in my iTunes library (and I still need to give that CD back to Michelle...).

I thought Snow Patrol and Interpol were OK, but nothing I heard of theirs made me feel like I had to own it now. I can see why other people like those bands (and OK Go and Spoon and others), but to me they're just OK. I probably wouldn't turn the station if any of them were on, but I wouldn't necessarily seek them out, either.

Unless my cousins are MM fans, not getting Modest Mouse runs in my family.

It's hard to believe I haven't bothered to make a music icon after six years on lj.

My cousin hates MM too. :-)

Hmmm ok..I just threw a variety of different kinds of songs out there. At least I scored a win on the Foo Fighters and QOTSA.

I don't *hate* MM, I just don't get them.

I think you scored better than FF and QOTSA. I downloaded that Kasabian song, too. Your list was full of things I liked, but not always enough to download them immediately. I don't think I hated anything on your list.

I don't *hate* MM, I just don't get them, especially lately. I almost like the "Dramamine" era.

I really like KT Tunstall. A lot. She might be too "folksy" for you, though. Preview first.

Wayne Shorter's Allegria is lovely. (I think that's the name.)

Scissor Sisters make my life worth living. But I really don't know if you'd like that!

Love Scissor Sisters too!

I recognized KT Tunstall. I don't know where or when, but it's good to know that I haven't been *completely* under a rock forever.

I listened to Alegria, and I LOVE Wayne Shorter in general. "Footprints" is one of my all-time favorites. That Alegria album has some great personnel, too, like John Patitucci on bass (perhaps the best in the business).

I listened to a couple of Scissor Sisters songs since you had suggested them. Thanks, but they're really not me at all.

I remember liking them when they first came out, but for some reason I didn't buy the album. I'll definitely check them out again. Which songs/albums are favorites of yours?

ANTICS. I'm still so in love with that album.

Their first album has got some great songs on it, too - like PDA, NYC, Obstacle 1 & Obstacle 2

Their latest, Our Love To Admire, is pretty damn good, too - there's only one or two songs on it I'm not into!

Interpol is awesome. I highly, highly recommend them. x]

Cool. I'll sit down and listen to...all...of the Interpol on iTunes, I guess.

I do believe that gives me some idears to put on some cds for you. :-) You might not want to go downloading any Beck just yet. :-)

Personally...I've been really getting into Swedish pop lately. I love Jens Lekman from the bottom of my heart and have for several years, so you might check out either Julie or Put your Arms Around Me if you can stand the ukulele (see also, the Concretes and Taken by Trees).

If you like retro-y type stuff, VHS or Beta is pretty cool (my fave is Night on Fire. I'm also a big fan of The Decemberists.

I never would have thought to look those up, so thanks for the suggestions.
